Why Green MEPs matter

Think the Euro elections on June 4th don't matter? Think again.

As Rupert Read, Green prospective MEP for our region, visits St Albans today to drum up support, Barack Obama takes office tomorrow. What's the link?

A central plank of Obama's campaign is to take ecology seriously. But he will not be able to do it alone. To get his measures through Congress, he'll need to point to the progress that's being made in Europe, to convince the US that they lag behind.

Europe has been taking the lead on ideas to tackle climate change. This is due in no small part to the Green MEPs from the UK and other countries.

But these MEPs face big opposition from heavy industry and coal-hungry countries like Poland. They need all the support they can get, and electing more Greens to the European Parliament would send all the right messages.

If Rupert Read and others are pushing through effective measures in Brussels, the US is much more likely to join in.
